A real-world way to think of throughput is as miles per gallon. It measures how much useful output (miles traveled) is produced per unit of input (one gallon of fuel). Or in an environment — what is actually going on in the deployment? How efficiently is the system performing? How much data can be moved within a certain amount of time?

Uptime then is a question of — does the car turn on?

 

Uptime is a crucial metric to look at, but it doesn’t tell the full story. This is where other metrics like throughput come in.

My Uptime Is Fine — Why Does Throughput Matter?

 

Uptime is important, but uptime alone doesn’t tell you the full performance story.

 

Downtime is obvious. It’s very clear to any organization when their system isn’t online, which means downtime is usually easy to spot across organizations. Throughput issues, their effects, and how they’re noticed highly depend on the organization impacted.

 

For example, a radiology organization works with large numbers of complex scans. A company like this might not notice drops in throughput because so much data is being processed so often, their workload isn’t sensitive in that way.

 

However, what about an organization that provides medical transportation to patients for doctor’s appointments, hospital visits, etc.? For this type of organization, a drop in throughput would be felt right away. Their queue of callers would build and their ability to address them would be compromised.

 

A relatively small drop in throughput can have a proportionally oversized business impact depending on how an organization operates. Even though uptime isn’t this nuanced, it simply isn’t enough to say that you provide 99.99% uptime. Uptime is a just measurement of if your application is online or not.

It guarantees access, but it doesn’t guarantee performance or responsiveness.

Why Latency Is Rarely a Single Issue

When people talk about latency, they’re usually referring to network latency. This is a measurement of how long it takes for one device to respond to another. Other forms of latency can also impact storage. This would be a measurement of how long it takes for the physical storage to respond to a request from the operating system.

It’s important to consider that latency will always exist, it doesn’t completely go away. This is because latency measures how long an action takes to complete. In this way, it is a measurement of time and performance.

Nothing happens instantaneously, so operations will always take some amount of time. Are your systems loading within milliseconds? Are you seeing a 3-4 second delay? Do some requests even take minutes to complete?

The key is to control the variables that cause latency to reduce it to the point where users don’t notice.

Part of the problem is that there is no universal cause of latency.

When we discuss issues with latency, we are often looking at a combination of variables, as it’s rarely as simple as a single thing slowing down the whole system. Server distance, outdated hardware, code inefficiencies, unstable network connection — all of these things are examples of variables that can compound on each other to create latency issues.

Let’s see an example.

Radiology is an important field for diagnostic and treatment services. An imaging organization has an office performing at a fraction of the expected speeds. Scans are taking minutes to load, which is unacceptable to the radiologists. Employees become frustrated, staff quit, doctors run behind, and patient care is negatively impacted, threatening the integrity of the organization.

Systems are so slow and experiencing so many issues that the office can’t see the same volume of patients as other locations, impacting their reputation and revenue. No one at the organization knows why this is occurring, so they can’t fix the issue and performance continues to degrade over the span of years.

They decide to bring in a Managed Service Provider (MSP) who thoroughly inspects their entire system. The MSP is able to identify a number of problem areas contributing to latency and other issues.
